Day.38. A mountainering feat

Yep, we made it to the top of the highest mountain in the universe....sorry, Australia. We trudged hundreds of Ks, pushed on through the death zone, without even a whiff of oxygen & summited, all by lunchtime & got home in time for an afternoon nap.

Thredbo Village a 30k drive from our digs.

A creek & walking bridge from the village to the chairlift.

On the 1.8km chairlift taking us to the start of the walk.

Some changing scenery on the way up on the chairlift. The wind picked up to 60k on the way up & nearly blew our ears off.

Approaching the massive rock buttress near the end of the chairlift ride.

The start of our 13k walk to the highest point in Australia. First thing to do was to put on jumpers as it was very cold & windy. We nearly left our coats behind as it was over 30* back at our vans in Jindabyne, but all worked out OK.

Pano of this amazing landscape.

Rest stop on a rock pano.

Our first view of the summit of Mt Kosciuszko. In the centre of the picture, with a thin long streak of white ice below the summit.

One of many small crystal clear streams from the snow which is still melting.

Part of the many kilometres of steel mesh, which is really good to walk on.

Approaching the summit of Mt Kosciuszko.

An alpine lake in a glacial valley.

A dunny cut into the hillside with a big heavy steel door & bolt, can also be used as a shelter in bad storms.

A couple head off on the trail that branches of to Charlotte Pass, 11k away.

Here we are at the top of Australia.

Another view from the summit of Mt Kosciuszko.

A short video to prove we made it.

There were quite a few trail side wild flowers.

Pano ...The white trail leading off to the middle distance leads to Charlotte Pass & the thin brown trail leading to the right is our trail of metal mesh.

All the way up we saw hardly anyone at all, but on the way back we passed hundreds coming up.

Our yellow brick road.

Pano of the Yellow brick road.

Another lovely clear spring.

A drink in the Eagles Nest restaurant, above the chair lift, after the walk.

We went with the health food option.

Heading back down to Thredbo on the chair lift.

Nearly there, Greg & I went back up & down the chair lift for another run.

The site of the Thredbo disaster back in 1997.

The chair lift we travelled up taken from the opposite hill.

Took a detour through Lake Crackenback on the way home.
